Collaboration Brew, Renegade: American Pale Ale
This is a collaboration brew between Hope Beer Dublin and Pittsburgh's Tortured Souls Brewing, crafted to celebrate the Pittsburgh vs. Minnesota American Football matchup at Croke Park. This American Pale Ale is brewed with German hops and grains in tribute to Pittsburgh's rich European immigrant heritage.
Weyermann Pilsner malt provides a very clean, light colored base beer, with biscuit and bread flavors, and a little malt sweetness. Modern German hops are used late in the boil and in the whirlpool to give some fruity and tropical flavors. These are:
Hallertau Blanc: known for pineapple, gooseberry, white grape, fresh lemongrass, and passion fruit flavors and aromas.
Solero: A new hop variety that is known for flavors of tropical and passion fruits along with mango.
Renegade is fermented with a Kolsch style yeast, which further accentuates the fruity flavors of the hops. At a healthy 6% ABV, the body and alcohol flavor should be fairly robust though, and will complement the medium to high hop bitterness
Aroma: Passion Fruit
Flavour: Little malt sweetness balanced with fruity and tropical hop flavors; Passion fruit and mango
Food pairing: The fruity profile of beer can complement the heat of dishes like spicy curries or buffalo wings, and the tropical flavors work well with barbecue or grilled meat.
