During the 80-year war, both Alkmaar and the Zaan region were besieged
by the Spaniards. For those who did not want to convert, a cruel fate lay
The threat of treatment by the "Spanish Inquisition" loomed. The population was literally put under Spanish pressure, but Alkmaar was liberated in 1573, and the Zaan region achieved a resounding victory in 1574. We celebrate this collective resistance with this exceptionally robust Barley Wine. Dark and full-bodied , and definitely not torture.
